This research examined the interpersonal meaning of presidential campaign speeches delivered by Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire Primary on January 8, 2008. It was also conducted to find out the similarities and differences of the two speakers in fulfilling the interpersonal meaning. Furthermore, this research discussed the speakers’ reason in relation to the speakers’ gender when they employed certain communication strategies in their interpersonal interaction. This research was a qualitative study applying descriptive comparative method. It was based on systemic functional linguistics approach, focusing on the analysis of interpersonal meaning covering status, affect, and contact. Besides, this study used total sampling technique in taking the data. Hence, all clauses in the speeches were analyzed through several elements of lexicogrammar, including mood structure, MOOD system, transitivity system, thematic structure, lexis system, clause system, nominal group, cohesion, text structure, and genre. The analysis yields three findings. Firstly, according to the realization of interpersonal meaning in general, both speakers tend to be the same. It means the status between the two speakers and the audiences as well as the participants inside the speeches are unequal, the affect of both speakers towards the audiences is positive but negative towards the participants inside the speeches. In this case, the negative judgment towards the participants inside the speeches portrays that the ideology of the speakers is left-antagonist. Moreover, the contact between the speakers and the audiences is involved and both speakers also employ familiar and readable language. Secondly, the similarities of both speakers lie on the affect and the familiarity of language. Meanwhile, the differences of the two speakers can be identified from the status employed. In this case, Obama and Hillary have their own ways to show their power. In addition, in terms of the degree of involvement, Obama employs more devices to involve the audiences in the interaction. Finally, it can be pointed out that the gender of the speaker contributes to the distinctive communication strategies and the speakers’ ways in maintaining the social relationship with the audiences.
