×The objectives of the research are: (1) to find out whether optimizing the use of pictures can improve students‟ speaking competence. (2) To find out what is the classroom situation when pictures are optimally used.
This research was carried out at SMAN 1 Cigugur, Kuningan. It was conducted from July 2012 up to October 2012. The subject of the research was the students of the class XI IPS 3 of SMAN 1 Cigugur in the academic year of 2012/2013. The research method was classroom research and it was conducted in two cycles. In collecting the data, I used interview, observation, diaries, document and test. Having collected the data, I analyzed both qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were analyzed by using constant comparative method: comparing incident applicable to each category, integrating categories and their properties, delimiting the theory, and writing the theory. While the quantitative data were analyzed by descriptive statistics to calculate the mean scores of pre-test, post-test 1, and post-test 2.
The research findings show pictures can improve: (1) the students‟ speaking competence: (a) The students could express their idea fluently; (b) The students could use appropriate vocabularies; (c) they could produce grammatical sentences; (d) They could pronounce some English words correctly; and (2) classroom situation. It shows that: (a) during the speaking class the students can answer teacher‟s questions; (b) the students had courage to express their idea freely; (c) the speaking activities was not limited in the written way; (d) they are able to focus their attention in speaking class, they involved in speaking activities.
This research showed that there is improvement not only on the students‟ speaking competence during the research but also the quality of teaching-learning process. It can be stated that the speaking class is more effective and alive when I optimized the use of pictures as visual media.
