×The objectives of the research are to identify whether the use of authentic material improve the students’ listening skill in English class and to describe the classroom situation when authentic materials are implemented in this research.
The method used in this research was a collaborative action research. The research was conducted in two cycles at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Banyudono from October to November 2013. The research data were collected through interview, observation, questionnaire and test. The qualitative data were analyzed by assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretations, and reporting the outcomes. The quantitative data were analyzed by comparing the mean score of pre-test and post-test.
The research findings show that authentic materials improve the students’ listening skill and the classroom situation. It was indicated by the improvement of students’ mean score. The mean score of pre-test was 58.25. It improved to 67.15 in first post-test and increased up to 75.17 in second post-test. The improvements of students’ listening skill are: 1) the students could find the main idea, 2) the students could find the explicit information, 3) the students could find the implicit information, and 4) the students could find the meaning of the word. The improvement of classroom situation are: 1) the students paid attention to the teacher’s explanation, 2) the students actively participate during the lesson, 3) the students showed interests in the materials and teaching technique used by the teacher, and 4) the students showed high motivation in listening class.
