× The objectives of the research are: (1) to identify whether guided writing can improve students’ skill in writing; (2) to identify the improvement in classroom situation of using guided writing in teaching and learning process. The method used in this research was classroom action research. This research conducted at class XI IPS3 students of SMA N 1 Karanganyar. The researcher conducted two cycles of action research from July until December 2013. The research of the data were collected by using techniques of interview, observation, tests (pre-test and post-test). The qualitative data were analyzed by using assembling, coding, comparing the data, building interpretation, and reporting outcomes by Burns. Then, the quantitative data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The research findings show that guided writing can improve the students’ writing skill and the classroom situation. The improvement of the students’ writing skill includes: (1) the students could explore the ideas more to write; (2) the students could compose the coherent text; (3) the students could use the proper word within a sentence; (4) the students could use the correct spelling, punctuation, and capitalization in writing. Besides, the improvement of students’ writing skill could be seen from the students’ mean score of the tests. The mean score of pre-test was 65.89, it improved to 76.26 in first post-test, and it increased up to 80.56 in second post-test. The improvement of classroom situation includes: (1) the students did actively participate during the lesson; (2) the students paid attention to the teacher’s explanation; (3) the students more focused to do academic activities; (4) the students answered and asked the question in learning activity. From the results above, it could be concluded that guided writing technique could improve the students’ writing skill and classroom situation. It is recommended that the teacher can implement guided writing technique to overcome the students’ writing problems.
