× This research is aimed at finding whether Group Work can enhance students’ reading comprehension in reading class of the first grade students of English Department of Siliwangi University; and class situation when Group Work is applied. The method used in this research was classroom action research and was conducted in two cycles from March 5th until April 11th, 2013 at the first grade students of English Department Siliwangi University Tasikmalaya. The procedures included identifying problem and planning, implementing Group Work, observing, and reflecting. Data of the research was analysed through two kinds of analysing data. Quantitative data was analysed using descriptive statistics while qualitative one was analysed through the following steps, data reduction, data display, drawing conclusion and verification. The research can be concluded that the use of Group Work can enhance students’ reading comprehension. Related to the improvement of reading comprehension, it includes: (a) students are able to obtain and identify the author’s point of view, his ideas, and experience in which the students determine the main idea of text (topic), (b) students are able to infer detail information from the reading, (c) students are able to determine explicit and implicit meaning of the reading, and (d) students are able to enrich vocabulary mastery in relation to the context of reading. The results of all cycles conducted were as follows; In cycle I, the average score of post-test 68.6, in cycle II it became 78.4. Other findings show that when group work is implemented in reading class concerning on theimprovement of class situation, it involves: (a) students participate actively in the learningprocess; (b) students learn cooperatively when they were learning together; and(c) students are provided with opportunities to optimize their potencies. I finally draw recommendation that firstly the teacher should raise students’ critical thinking, motivate the unmotivated students and encourage them in the class and be aware to students’ atmosphere and know their level of knowledge.
