An Analysis Of The Translation  Of Colloquial Expression  In The Wild Child Movie

× This research focuses on the analysis of the translation of colloquial expression found in the Wild child movie. The objectives of this research are to identify and describe the kinds of colloquial expression in the movie, to identify and describe the translation techniques used by the translator to translate colloquial expression in the movie, and to describe the effect of the techniques used on the quality of translation in terms of accuracy and acceptability. This research is descriptive qualitative. To collect the data, purposive sampling technique was applied. The data are the English colloquial expressions found in the Wild Child movie and their Indonesian translation. There are two types data in this research; colloquial expressions found in the Wild Child movie and translation quality assessments from three raters. The data were obtained by using content analysis and questionnaire. In content analysis, the researcher collected the data by selecting the dialogues which contains colloquial expressions. The total data of colloquial expression are 164 data. The form of questionnaire is a close-open ended. The questionnaire is distributed to the three raters who are translation experts. The analysis on the type of colloquial expression shows that there are four type of colloquial expression found in the Wild Child movie. They are Single Word (137 data), Clipped Word(18 data), verb-adverb combinations(7data) and Short Picturesque Word for Technical Term (2 data) The analysis on the translation technique shows that there are eight technique applied by the translator. They are amplification (2 data), substitution (1 data), pure borrowing (5 data), naturalization (5 data), generalization (6data), particularization (5 data), deletion (33 data), established equivalent (107 data). The analysis on the translation accuracy shows that136 data are accurate, 7data are less accurate and 19 data are not accurate. The analysis on the translation acceptability shows that 150 data are acceptable, 6 data are less acceptable, and 8data are unacceptable. The technique resulting with high level of accuracy is established equivalent and borrowing. While, the technique resulting low level accuracy is deletion technique. The technique resulting with resulting high level of acceptability is established equivalent technique. While, the technique resulting low level acceptability is deletion technique. It is recommended that in translating colloquial expressions into TT, the translator should produce better quality translation by reducing some mistakes, such as, reducing the use of deletion technique since this technique works by omitting word or other parts of the SL in the TL. In other words, the translator does not translate some parts of the SL. The mistakes in omitting some items or words makes the expressive meaning of the SL cannot be felt by the readers. The translator should also use proper diction in translate colloquial expression. Failing in choosing the right diction can make the translation sounds unnatural since the words are not familiar for the readers.
