×The objectives of this research are: (1) to enhance the students’ reading comprehension by implementing PQ4R strategy; and (2) to describe the students’ activeness in learning when the teacher applies PQ4R strategy. The problem revealed in this research is the low students’ score in reading test of the eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Madiun in the 2013/2014 academic year.
This Classroom Action Research was undertaken from October 2013 to December 2013. It was conducted in two cycles, each of which comprises four meetings. The subject of the research was the eleventh grade students of TITL1 (Installation of Electric Power Engineering) of SMK Negeri 1 Madiun. This research used qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative data were collected by conducting direct observation in the classroom and holding regular meeting with the collaborator to find out the students’ improvement. Questionnaire, interview, photographs, and field notes were used in doing the research. Quantitative data were the students’ scores that were obtained from the pre-test and post-test. The techniques of analyzing the data used quantitative and qualitative techniques. Descriptive statistics comprises means and percentage was used to analyze the quantitative data. The interactive model which is suggested by Miles and Huberman was used to analyze the qualitative data.
The result of the research revealed that PQ4R strategy enhanced the students’ comprehension in reading recount text as shown by the obtained scores of reading comprehension in the post test. The mean score for identifying main idea was 75.8, the mean score for identifying indirectly stated detailed information was 77.3, the mean score for identifying directly stated detailed information was 85.4, the mean score for test item on the meaning of word was 75.3, and the mean score for test item dealing with pronoun reference was 77.8. Beside, it also improved the students’ participation in class. Students became more active, paid attention to the lesson, tried to respond well both to their teacher and friend, discussed their problems with friends, learnt from each other, and were exited in joining it.
It is recommended that the teacher should introduce PQ4R strategy to their students since it can improve not only the students’ achievement in comprehending text but also the students’ activeness in teaching learning process. It’s also necessary for the teacher to encourage their students to apply appropriate strategy in reading. Applying appropriate strategy enables them to be more independent readers so they can improve their reading.
