×This report entails the design of a plant using the UNIPOL gas phase polymerization process to produce 100.000 ton of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) per year from ethylene and hydrogen. This plant is planned to be developed at industrial area of Cilegon, Banten in 2019 and the operation is expected in the beginning of 2020. HDPE is used as a raw material of various houses appliances, industrial pipe, and spare part of automotive industries.
The process of polymerization of ethylene is exothermic reaction assisted by Ziegler-Natta catalyst. The process is undertaken at 15 bar and 80oC in Adiabatic Fluidized Bed Reactor (FBR). The raw materials are ethylene, hydrogen, nitrogen and catalyst Ziegler-Natta with total consumption, respectively, 105.108,595 MTPA, 0,361 MTPA, 6.567.855 MTPA and 40,51 MTPA. The conversion of reaction is 2% for each pass (1 minutes 32 second). The Powder of HDPE is, then, sized in pelletizing unit to be pelleted to adjust market specification. Standard HDPE’s pellet size are 3,175 mm in diameter and 2 mm in length.
The utilities requirement are treated water, steam, compressed air, electricity and fuel. The total consumption of treated water is 93,071 m3/jam. The low pressure steam (125oC; 200 kPa) consumption is expected around 3.238,363 kg/jam. The consumption of 45 psig compressed air for instrumentation is 43 m3/jam. The total electric requirement is 3293,9 kW. The consumption of IDO for electricity generator is 257,6 liter/jam and coal for boiler is 173,17 kg/jam.
The limited company (ltd.) is chosen as a form of company. The plant is expected to be developed in the area of 1,23 Ha. The plant is full day operated in 330 days. The amount of labor needs is 197 labors.
Based on economic calculation, the capital investment needed is Rp. 267.629.601.551 and working capital for startup operation is Rp. 691.217.965.988. The total manufacturing cost for one year is Rp. 1.937.790.504.873. After conducting an analysis of feasibility of the plants, it was determined that the plant is profitable exhibiting a Return on Investment of 45%. All investment is returned for about 1,83 years. The minimum even condition of plant is 40% production and the production is unprofitable under 20,79% production.
From the economic calculation and feasibility analysis indicate that the High Density Polyethylene Plant from Ethylene by UNIPOL Gas Phase Process Capacity 100.000 MTPA is feasible to be established in Indonesia.
