× This study aims at: (1) describing the successful language learners’ strategies in learning vocabulary and (2) exploring the factors which affect the successful language learners in using the vocabulary learning strategies. This study apply a case study method which had been carried out at SMP N 8 Purwokerto in the second semester of the academic year of 2013/2014. The data were collected through observation, interview, and documentation. The data were, then, analyzed using interactive model proposed by Miles and Huberman which covers data reduction, data display, drawing conclusion and verification. The research findings show that; (1) the successful language learners’ strategies in learning vocabulary are divided into two big main issues, they are discovery strategies and consolidation strategies. The first is the discovery strategies. These strategies are divided into two parts, they are: determination strategies and social strategies. The determination strategies used by the successful language learners are: analyzing part of speech, analyzing affixes and roots, checking of L1 cognate, guessing from textual context, analyzing any available pictures or gestures, using bilingual dictionary, and word lists. The social strategies used by them are: asking teacher for an L1 translation, asking classmate for meaning, and discovery meaning through group work activity. The second is the consolidation strategies. It is divided into four parts, they are: social strategies, memory strategies, cognitive strategies, and metacognitive strategies. The social strategies that used by the successful language learner was interact with native speaker. The memory strategy which used by the successful language learners was connecting word to a personal experience and using new word in sentences, then the cognitive strategy used by them was taking notes in class, and the metacognitive strategies used by them was using English language media, (2) the strategies used by them were affected by some factors. There are six factors explored from the interviews which influence their ways in learning vocabulary, they are: motivation, perception on certain strategies, previous learning experience, family, environment, and teacher’s strategies in teaching. Considering the result of the study, the vocabulary learning strategies used by the successful language learners influenced by various factors. One of the factors which influenced the students in using the vocabulary learning strategies is the teacher’s strategies in teaching. Therefore, the teacher should pay more attention to the learning strategies in order to determine the appropriate teaching strategies for the students due to the important role he or she has in learning.
