× This thesis is written to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery and to know the strengths and weaknesses when music and songs are applied in the teaching learning process. The subject of this research was the students of B-1 class of Kindergarten St. Bernardus Madiun in the academic year of 2013/2014. It is a classroom action research. The procedures of the research consist of planning, action, observation, and reflection. In collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaire, interview, field notes, and test. To analyze the quantitative data, the researcher applied a descriptive statistics. To analyze the qualitative data, the researcher analyzed the improvement of the teaching learning process based on the results of questionnaire, interview, and field notes using Constant Comparative Method. The findings of the study show that the application of music and songs in the process of teaching and learning vocabulary can solve the students’ problem in mastering the four aspects of vocabulary. The result of the tests shows that music and songs can improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. The improvement can be found by comparing the average score of the Pre-test and Post-test in Cycle 1 and 2. The average scores of the Pre-test is 65.48, Post-test 1 is 74.76, and Post-test 2 is 81.19. The results of questionnaire, interview, and field notes show the strengths and the weaknesses of music and songs. The strengths of applying music and songs are: (1) they can attract the students’ attention; (2) they can trigger the students’ curiosity and interest; (3) they can create the fun learning situation; (4) they can motivate students to learn English; and (5) music and songs are effective media to teach vocabulary; and (6) applying those media in the classroom keeps the students focused on the lesson. The weaknesses are: (1) music and songs are sometimes difficult to be applied, and (2) using music and songs as a media of teaching vocabulary is also boring for the students. The researcher comes to the conclusion that there is an improvement of the students’ vocabulary mastery using music and songs. There are also some strengths and weaknesses when music and songs are applied in teaching vocabulary. Based on the result of the research, it is recommended that teachers and students should use music and songs as the good alternative media in reaching good vocabulary mastery.
