×The objectives of this research are to find out the correlation between (1)
reading comprehension and paraphrasing skill; (2) sentence structure mastery and
paraphrasing skill; and (3) reading comprehension, sentence structure mastery and
paraphrasing skill.
This research used quantitative method, that is, correlational study. The
study was carried out in December 2013 at English Education Department,
Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Sebelas Maret University. The
population was all the fifth semester students of English Education Department
consisting of three classes. The total number of students was 96. The sample was
30 students taken by cluster random sampling technique. The instruments in
collecting the data were tests. Objective test was used to collect the data of
reading comprehension and sentence structure mastery; while an essay test was
used to collect the data of paraphrasing skill. The techniques used to analyze the
data were Single Correlation and Multiple Regression Correlation.
The results of the data analysis show that in the level of significance of α =
0.05 (1) there is a positive and significant correlation between reading
comprehension and paraphrasing skill ( = 0.463 > rt = 0.361); (2) there is a
positive and significant correlation between sentence structure mastery and
paraphrasing skill ( =0.597 > rt = 0.361); and (3) there is positive and
significant correlation between reading comprehension, sentence structure
mastery and paraphrasing skill (Ry12 = 0.616 and Fo = 8.25 > Ft = 3.35).
Based on the results of the study, it is concluded that there is a positive
and significant correlation between reading comprehension and paraphrasing
skill. There is a positive and significant correlation between sentence structure
mastery and paraphrasing skill, and there is positive and significant correlation
between reading comprehension, sentence structure mastery simultaneously and
paraphrasing skill of the fifth semester students of English Education Department
in the academic year of 2013/2014.
The result of this research shows that reading comprehension and sentence
structure mastery are important factors that give contribution to paraphrasing
skill. Both reading comprehension and sentence structure mastery give 38.23%
effective contribution to paraphrasing skill. So, reading comprehension and
sentence structure mastery should be considered in increasing paraphrasing skill,
although the factors are not the only variables determining paraphrasing skill.
