The research aims: 1) To describe the implementation of Cooperative
Learning activities in English class to promote student’s character building on
the ninth grade students of SMP Kristen Kalam Kudus Surakarta in the year
20012/2013; 2) To identify the difficulties in implementing cooperative
learning activities in English class to promote student’s character building, and
3) To find the solutions for overcoming the difficulties in implementing
Cooperative Learning activities in English class to promote student’s character
building.
The research conducted at Kalam Kudus Christian Junior High School
was done using the method of case study of a qualitative research, and the
learning process of English class is using the techniques of Jigsaw and Think-
Pair-Share to create activities to build characters.
Based on the research some findings found in the field related to the
implementation of Cooperative Learning activities are as follows: 1) The
documents used in implementing Cooperative Learning activities, such as
curriculum, syllabus, lesson plan; 2) Cooperative Learning techniques used in
English class; 3) Character development through Cooperative Learning. The
activities of learning are implemented in groups or pair works. There are
problems coming from the student’s perspective. Some of them are that not
all of the students are willing to do the work in group. They prefer to do the
work alone because it can be completed faster. The other problem is that they
are difficult to explain in English.
The result of the process of cooperative learning is that students can
build or improve their attitudes, manner, and behavior such as honesty,
responsibility, appreciation, respect others, and self-confidence. At least those
are the characters that students can achieve after finishing the learning
process.
