×The Purposes Of The Research Are To: (1) Reveal Whether Shadowing Method Can Enhance Students’ Listening Ability In Recognizing Words Or Not And The Extent Of The Improvement Of Students’ Listening Ability In Recognizing Words; (2) Identify The Strengths And Weaknesses Of Shadowing Method; And (3) Find Out The Difficulties Encountered In Using Shadowing Method In The Listening Class.
This Classroom Action Research Was Conducted In Three Cycles Which Consisted Of Four Steps Of Classroom Action Research Procedure: Planning, Acting, Observing, And Reflecting. The Sampling Technique Used Was The Purposive Sampling, And The Sample Was Viii E Class. In Addition, The Data Consisted Of Qualitative And Quantitative Data. The Qualitative Data Were Collected Through Observation, Questionnaire, Interview, And Research Diary, And Were Analyzed Using Constant Comparative Method. Meanwhile, The Quantitative Data Were Obtained Through Listening And Analyzed By Using Descriptive Statistics.
The Result Reveals That Using Shadowing Method Can: (1) Enhance The Students’ Listening Ability In Recognizing Words. The Improvement Includes Students’ Ability To; (1a) Identify The Sounds Of The Words Which Contain Either Initial Or Final Consonants Or Short And Long Vowel Sounds; (1b) Identify Words With Similar Sound But Have Different Meaning And Spelling; (1c) Find Out Explicit Information, (1d) Rewrite The Heard Words. The Mean Scores Increase From 50.69 In The Pre Test To 74.62 In The Post Test. Besides, (2) The Strengths Of Shadowing Method Are The Method: (2a) Improves Students’ Word Recognition Skill; (2b) Improves Students’ Concentration; (2c) Helps Students To Overcome Their Distraction Toward Listening To The Native English Speakers; (2d) Helps Students To Understand What Is Being Said; (2e) Creates Positive Interdependence Among Students; (2f) Creates Positive Attitude Toward Listening To English; (2g) Improves Students’ Vocabulary. Meanwhile, The Weakness Is (3) The Teacher’s Difficulty To Control Whether All The Students Really Did Shadowing Or Not. Then, (4) The Difficulties Encountered When Using The Method In The Classroom Are: (4a) Teaching And Learning Depends On The Audio And Electricity; Therefore, The Teacher Should Make Sure The Audio In Good Condition And The Electricity Works Properly; (4b); The Noise Of Other Students From The Outside Classroom Distracts The Students’ Concentration While Doing Shadowing; The Teacher Can Make The Students To Do Shadowing In Group Using Headset Or Earphone To Listen The Audio To Solve This Difficulty.
Shadowing Method Can Be Best Utilized To Help The Students To Improve Their Listening Ability In Recognizing Words. Hopefully, The Result Of The Research Can Be A Useful Resource To Improve The Quality Of Teaching Listening.
