×This research was conducted to find out whether there is a correlation
between (1) reading interest and reading comprehension; (2) grammatical
competence and reading comprehension; and (3) reading interest, grammatical
competence simultaneously, and reading comprehension.
In this research, the correlational method was used and it was carried out
in November 2013 at SMA Negeri 1 Cilacap. The population was all of the
second grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Cilacap in academic year 2013/2014,
which consisted of twelve classes. The number of population was 322 students
and this research took 32 students as the sample by cluster random sampling. A
questionnaire was used to collect the data of students’ reading interest, while an
objective test was used to collect the data of grammatical competence and reading
comprehension. Single and Multiple Linear Regression and Correlation were used
to analyze the data.
The result of the analysis shows that (1) there is a positive correlation
between students’ reading interest and reading comprehension (rx1y= 0.352 ); (2)
there is a positive correlation between grammatical competence and reading
comprehension(rx2y=0.588); and (3) there is a positive correlation between
students’ reading interest, grammatical competence simultaneously, and reading
comprehension(ry12=0.602). Thus, it cannot be neglected that reading interest and
grammatical competence contribute to reading comprehension.
