× The eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Jaten in the academic year of 2012/2013 had problems dealing with writing skill. To overcome the problems, the researcher designed a classroom action research to teach writing using Picture. This research aims finding out whether using picture can improve students’ writing skill and how is the implementation of picture in the writing class of the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Jaten in the academic year of 2012/2013. This research was carried out in class VIII A of SMP N 1 Jaten in the academic year of 2012/2013. The research was conducted two cycles. Each cycles consisted four meetings. The researcher used qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were collected from observation, interview and questionnaire. The quantitative data were collected by using test. It was analyzed by comparing the scores of pre test (before implementing picture) and post test (after implementing picture), while the qualitative data were analyzed by using qualitative technique analysis which consists of four steps: data collection, data reduction, data display, and data conclusion. The research findings showed that there were some improvements of students; writing skill after doing the action. The improvements of students writing skill include: (1) students were able to focus their main ideas and focus their writing. (2) students were able to organize the text; (3) students were able to use proper vocabulary; (4) students were able to use correct grammar; (5) students were more concerned with the mechanical aspects of writing. These improvements were proved by the result of the tests. The mean scores of the test result were 51.62 for the pre-test, 68.00 for the post-test in cycle 1 and 78.31 for the post-test in cycle 2. Related to improvement in classroom situation, the research finding shows that (1) students gave more attention to the teacher’s explanation. Their changing behavior increased their activity during the lesson. (2) students got sufficient, varied and enough material to learn writing. (3) students had more motivation and became enthusiastic in writing class. Based on the result, it can be concluded the use of pictures can improve students’ writing skill and class situation. Based on the findings presented above, the researcher expects that picture can be used in other writing classes. Keyword: Writing, Picture, Classroom Action Research
