Teaching Speaking Using Authentic Material Compared To Textbook Material Viewed From Students’ Creativity (An Experimental Study At The Second Grade Students Of Smpn 14 Surakarta In The Academic Year 2013/2014)

×The Objective Of The Research Was To Find Out Whether: (1) Authentic Material Is More Effective Than Textbook Material To Teach Speaking; (2) The Students Having High Creativity Have Better Speaking Skill Than Those Having Low Creativity; And (3) There Is An Interaction Between Teaching Materials And Students’ Creativity In Teaching Speaking.
The Research Was Conducted In Smpn 14 Surakarta. The Research Population Was The Second Grade Students In The Academic Year Of 2013/2014. The Selected Sampling Technique Was Cluster Random Sampling That Further Generated Two Classes As The Research Samples Covering 38 Students Of Experimental Class Taught Using Authentic Material And 38 Students Of Control Class Taught Using Textbook Material. The Research Instruments Consisted Of Verbal Creativity Test And Speaking Test. The Creativity Test And Speaking Test Were Readable After They Were Tried Out In Another Class. The Data Were The Result Of Speaking Test (Post-Test) That Was Taken After Eight Meeting Treatments For Each Class. The Data Analysis Was Done By Applying Descriptive And Inferential Statistics (Anova And Tukey Hsd Test) To Test The Research Hypothesis.
The Findings Of The Research Show That: (1) Authentic Material Is More Effective Than Textbook Material To Teach Speaking; (2) The Students Taught Using Authentic Material Have Better Speaking Skill Than Those Taught Using Textbook Material; And (3) There Is An Interaction Between Teaching Materials And Students’ Creativity To Teach Speaking.
Therefore, For Enriching Students’ Speaking Skill, It Is Recommended For English Teachers To Apply Authentic Material In Speaking Class. In Addition, Teachers Are Suggested To Consider Students’ Level Of Creativity When They Apply Teaching Materials In Speaking Class. For Other Researchers, It Is Hoped That These Research Findings Can Be Used As A Reference For Future Researches. Moreover, Other Researchers May Conduct Researches Viewed From Other Psychology Aspects.
