The effect of social performance on corporate value with size, profitability, and leverage as control variable (empirical study on companies listed in Indonesia stock exchange period 2006)

× ABSTRACT The aim of this research is to analyze the effect of corporate social performance on corporate value in Indonesia. Social performance can be defined as how far the corporate willingness to engaging CSR on its activities as part of community member. In this research, corporate value measured with market value concept approach. Market value is stocks price which forms by demand and supply interactions in the stock market. There are two different arguments about the effect of corporate social performance on corporate value. The first argument stated that CSR engagements are costly activities and a waste of scarce resources, and therefore have an adverse impact on corporate value. On the contrary, second argument stated that CSR as business strategy will increase corporate’s competitive advantage and good image. Competitive advantage and good image will positively affect sales that will raise the profitability. Corporate with high profitability will attract the investors to buy their stocks, which will increase stocks demand. The raise of stock demands will increase corporate’s stocks price, so corporate value will be increase too. This research use sample of Indonesian firms wich are listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange period 2006, to test the hypothesis. Social performance measured by annual report content analysis based on KLD (Kinder, Lydenberg, Domini) method. Corporate value will be measured by Price to Book Value (PBV) ratio. The result indicates that social performance have positive and significant influence on corporate value.
