ABSTRACT
This research focuses on the analysis of the translation of metaphorical expressions in the movie entitled The Dark Knight Rises. The objectives of this research are to find out the types of metaphorical expression, to find out the techniques applied by the translator in translating metaphorical expressions, and to find out the translation quality of metaphorical expressions translation in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability.
This research used descriptive qualitative method. The research method was applied through content analysis which was done by watching the movie, collecting the data by transcribing the English and Indonesian subtitle of the official movie The Dark Knight Rises. The total data found from the subtitle were 106. Then the questionnaire and interview were done and became the second data. Those steps were conducted to gain the score of accuracy, acceptability, and readability and to get deeper analysis.
The findings of this research are as follows: 1) There are four types of metaphor found in the movie, they are abstract concrete metaphor, animal metaphor, anthropomorphic metaphor, and sinaesthetic metaphor. 2) The translator applied three techniques in translating the metaphorical expressions, they are translating metaphor into metaphor with the similar meaning and form, translating metaphor without keeping the metaphorical imagery, and translating metaphor into metaphor with the similar meaning but different form. 3) The findings of translation quality in this research are accurate, acceptable, and readable.
Due to the research findings, the technique which gives the highest impact in term of accuracy is translating metaphor into metaphor with the similar meaning and form. This technique produced the most of data accurately. Then the highest number of acceptable translations is produced by the technique translating metaphor without keeping the metaphorical imagery. At last the highest impact of technique used in term of readability is also translating metaphor without keeping the metaphorical imagery.
