ABSTRACT
This research aims at finding out whether: (1) PQ4R is more effective than Direct Instruction to teach reading; (2) students who have high intelligence have better reading skill than those who have low intelligence; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ intelligence in teaching reading.
This research is an experimental research. The population is the eleventh grade students of Natural Science program of SMA MTA Surakarta in the academic year of 2014/2015. It consists of 248 students. Cluster random sampling is used to get two classes as the sample. Each class was divided into two groups (the students who have high and low intelligence) and the class XI MIA 4 was used as the experimental class and class XI MIA 5 as the control class. Each of the classes consists of 24 students. The experimental group was treated by using PQ4R, while the control group was treated by using Direct Instruction. Then, the instruments which were used to collect the data were documentation for getting the data of the students’ IQ and multiple choice for getting the students’ reading skill. The test was tried out to get valid and reliable items. The data were analyzed by using multifactor analysis of variance 2x2 and Tukey test.
Based on the result of this research, the findings are (1) PQ4R is more effective than Direct Instruction to teach reading; (2) the students who have high intelligence have better reading skill than those who have low intelligence; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ intelligence in teaching reading.
Referring to the findings above, it can be concluded that PQ4R is an effective method for teaching reading to the eleventh grade students of SMA MTA Surakarta. Therefore, it is suggested that: (1) PQ4R method can be used as one alternative method to teach reading; (2) the students must be aware of the importance of active involvement in teaching learning process; and (3) the other researchers who would like to conduct future research of the same kind with different sample and different students’ condition, this result of study can become reference.
