×This research discusses about the forms of girl bullying in American high school as portrayed in Mean Girls and the problem solving of girl bullying as offered by the film. This research is a library research in the form of descriptive-qualitative. The source of data is the original DVD of Mean Girl directed by Mark S. Waters. The main data consist of dialogues of the characters, the narration of the story, ideas, visual images, characters and characterization, actions, attitudes, behaviors, facial expressions and body language: gestures, postures, and movements of some characters that are related to the forms of girl bullying in American high school and the problem solving of girl bullying. The supporting data are reviews of the film, production notes, criticisms, and other information related to the film taken from the books and article of web sites. The objectives of the research are to describe the forms of girl bullying in American high school as portrayed in Mean Girls and the problem solving of girl bullying as offered by the film. In order to achieve the objectives, the researcher employs social psychological approach and semiotic film theory.
The analysis reveals that the forms of girl bullying in American high school are verbal bullying and relational bullying. Girls launch verbal bullying through intimidating phone calls and revealing others’ secrets and social or relational bullying through writing nasty notes, spreading rumors, and manipulating relationship. They engage bullying behavior to get and maintain popularity and power. To solve the girl bullying problem in American high school, some actions have to be done. Mean Girls offers some problem solving of girl bullying. The problem solving within school environment are take quick response and action when bullying occurs, get the girls involve in some activities to express their anger and power, and mix up the class and cafeteria. At home, in helping girls deal with bullying behavior, parents have to understand their daughters’ life and know about their relationship with others.
