ABSTRACT
This thesis is written in order (1) to identify whether or not and in what extent video through KWL method enhance Students’ Reading comprehension. (2) To describe the class climate when video through KWL method is implemented in reading class. This study was conducted on the preliminary study in SMA N Gondangrejo in which the researcher found that almost all of the students of the tenth grade got difficulty in understanding such reading text. Most of the students got difficulties catch the main idea of the text, get detail information, guess the meaning of word, find a reference and find the purpose of the text.
The research was conducted from 17 April - 10 Mei 2014 at SMA N Gondangrejo. The research was conducted in two cycles, in which the first and second cycle consisted of three meetings. Every cycle consists of four steps: planning, implementing, observation and reflection. The data were collected by using qualitative and quantitative method. The qualitative method consists of assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretations, and reporting the outcomes. The quantitative data were analyzed by comparing the mean scores of the pre-test and post-test.
In the end of the meeting, the research finding shows that the use of Know-Want-Learn (KWL) method with video aid can enhance the students’ reading comprehension and the classroom situation in teaching and learning activity. The improvement of students’ comprehension includes: (1) Students can find out the main idea of the text; (2) Students can identify detail information of the text; (3) Students can guess meaning of word based on the context; 4) Students can find out the reference (5) Students can find out the purpose of the text. The improvement of classroom situation includes: (1) the students enjoy the activity in the classroom. (2) The students are not noisy during teaching Learning English in the classroom. (3) The students tended to be active learner. In addition, the students’ mean score improves which can be seen from their mean score of pre-test 61.94, post-test 1 67.36 and Post-test 2 77.50.
Finally, it can be concluded that the use of KWL can improve the students’ reading skill and the class climate.
