× This research focuses on the subject of the turbulence of George Eliot’s mind in facing the social norms in her society as found in The Mill on the Floss. This research is a library research by employing descriptive qualitative to describe the phenomenon depicted in the novel. The data is divided into two kinds, the main data and the supporting data. The main data of this research was taken from the novel The Mill on The Floss written by George Eliot, while the supporting data were taken from other books, and encyclopedias, articles and internet that had the connection with the subject matter. The purpose of this research is to answer the research’s question proposed. That is to describe the turbulence of George Eliot’s mind in facing the social norms in her society as found in The Mill on the Floss. In order to achieve the purpose of the research, this research employed psychological, feminism, sociological and structural approaches. Analysis on the data shows that there is a close relationship between George Eliot and her main woman character in The Mill on the Floss, Maggie Tulliver. From the analysis of the character, it shows that Maggie was in great temptation because she was not in accordance with the norms of her society as what happened to George Eliot. From the analysis of the plot, it shows that a girl, like both Maggie Tulliver and George Eliot, was very difficult to be accepted by her society. From the analysis of the setting, it shows that there was s great influence of the industrial revolution toward the society’s point of view. From the analysis of the theme, it shows that George Eliot wanted to expose about the condition of a girl who got a social outcast as she herself was. A conclusion can be drawn from the analysis that George Eliot expressed her turbulence in facing social norms in her society through what was felt by Maggie Tulliver in The Mill on the Floss.
