ABSTRACT
The objectives of the research are: (1) to find out whether and how the use of Task-Based Instruction can develop students’ speaking skill in Madrasah Takhasusiyah PPMI Assalaam; and (2) to find out the improvement of class situation when Task-Based Instruction is applied to develop speaking skill in Madrasah Takhasusiyah PPMI Assalaam.
The research was conducted at TKS PPMI Assalaam, Sukoharjo in the academic year of 2012/2013. The subject of the research was the students of TKS B. This study was carried out from November 2012 up to Mei 2014. This Classroom Action Research (CAR) was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of three meetings and one post-test. There are two types of data in this study; qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were taken from the classroom observation, questionnaires, and interviews. The data were analyzed by using Constant Comparative Method (CCM) which consisted of four steps: (1) comparing incidents applicable to each category; (2) integrating categories and their properties; (3) delimiting the theory; and (4) writing the theory. The quantitative data were taken from the tests. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics to know the difference before and after the cycle.
The research findings showed that the use of Task-Based Instruction could: (1) improve the students’ speaking skill: a) they wereable to perform acceptable pronunciation to express understandable utterances; b) they were to use appropriate vocabulary; c) they were able to use appropriate language system or grammar to construct appropriate utterances, and (2) promotebetter class situation:a) the students’ speaking motivation; b) the students’ speaking duration; c) the students’  self-confidence; and d) the students’ speaking memory in delivering information.
Based on from the research’s results, it can be concluded that the use of Task-Based Instruction not only improves the students’ speaking skill but also makes better class situation.Therefore, it is recommended for the English teachers to employ Task-Based Instruction as an alternative method in their classes. The factsthat the implementation of Task-Based Instruction in speaking class can improve the students’ speaking skill and better class situation.
