Abstrak : Currently glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world after cataract, with a total of approximately 70 million people. In Indonesia, glaucoma ranks third as the leading cause of blindness after cataract and refractive errors. The prevalence of glaucoma in Indonesia is about 0,16% of the population with its potential to increase. This condition is due to the unspecific symptoms or without symptoms at all of the glaucoma. Even if primary open angle glaucoma patients are detected, they usually have reached an advanced stage with glaucomatous optic neuropathy and visual field changes. The target treatment for primary open-angle glaucoma is almost always aimed at the increasing intra ocular pressure, since it is the o nly easier to manipulate than the glaucomatus optic neuropathy and visual field changes. The current medical and surgical treatments for the increasing intra ocular pressure, however, are unsatisfactory. TGF-β is known to be present at elevated levels in aqueous humor of patients with Primary Open Angle Glaucoma(POAG). Our study aimed to investigate whether transforming growth factor-β and another cytokines as tumor necrosis factor-β and interleukine-10 which difference levels in aqueous humor of eyes with primary open angle glaucoma through infections-Th1, Th2, Th3 pathway. The aqoeous humor levels of tumor necrosis factor-β, interleukine-10 and trnasforming growth factor-beta were detected in twenty-one eyes has been done trabeculectomy from patients primary open-angle glaucoma with increased intra ocular pressure, and the control consist 13 cataract extracted patients with normal intra ocular pressure using Elisa method. Results of this study showed that, mean age of glaucoma patients (62.05 + 13.385 years) was similar to that the control patients (66.00 + 11.415 years with p= 0.372). Mean level of tumor necrosis factor- in aqueous humor samples of glaucoma patients (11.0057 + 10.07931 ng/ml), interleukine-10 (6.8343 + 2.11976 ng/ml) and transforming growth factor-beta (592.78 + 168.92823 pg/ml) were found to be elevated when compared to those the control patients with the mean level of tumor necrosis factor- in aqueous humor (0.1633 + 0.25303 ng/ml with p= 0.029), interleukine-10 (2.6943 + 0.61196 ng/ml with p= 0.001) and transforming growth factor- (362.0229 + 105.21864 pg/ml with p= 0.010) Results of this study showed that, mean age of glaucoma patients (62.05 + 13.385 years) was similar to that the control patients (66.00 + 11.415 years with p= 0.372).
