ABSTRACT
The objectives of this research are to find out whether or not there is significant, positive correlation between (1) reading strategies and reading ability (2) vocabulary mastery and reading ability (3) reading strategies and vocabulary mastery simultaneously and reading ability.
This research was carried out in April 2015 at SMA N 1 Karanganyar and used correlation as the method. The sample of the research is 30 students of XI IS3, taken by cluster random sampling, out of 469 students in eleventh grade as the population of the research. The instruments in collecting the data are questionnaire and test. Questionnaire is used to collect the data of reading strategies, while test is used to collect the data of vocabulary mastery and reading ability. The data are analyzed using single and multiple linear regression and correlation.
The results of the data analysis show that in the level of significance α = 0.05 there are positive, significant correlation between (1) reading strategies and reading ability (rx1y=0.573, to=3.696>tt=1.7), (2) vocabulary mastery and reading ability (rx2y= 0.74, to= 5.81>tt=1.7), and (3) reading strategies and vocabulary mastery simultaneously and reading ability (ry12=0.7424, Fo=16.57>Ft=3.35). It means that
The results of the study show that (1) the contribution of reading strategies toward reading ability is 32.79%, (2) The contribution of vocabulary mastery toward reading ability is 54.64%, and (3) The contribution of reading strategies and vocabulary mastery toward reading ability is 55.11%. It can be concluded that the increase of students’ reading strategies and vocabulary mastery is followed by the increase of students’ reading ability.
