ABSTRACT
This present study aims at finding out whether and to what extent the use of CSR method can enhance students’ reading comprehension and participation in classroom activities.
The research had been conducted in two cycles since May until June 2015 at SMP Negeri 1 Reban. In this study, 36 eighth grade students of class E consisting of 17 males and 19 females participated. The data obtained from the participants and events were collected through the use of four techniques of collecting the data including interview, observation, questionnaire, and test. Those first three types of data were analyzed qualitatively using Burn’s technique of analyzing the data including assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretations, and reporting the outcomes. Then, the descriptive statistics was employed to analyze the last type of data.
The results of the study reveal that the use of CSR method enhances students’ reading comprehension and participation in classroom activities. Before being treated by using this method, the students’ mean score was 53.12. Finishing the first cycle, in post-test 1, the students’ mean score increased to 62.57. Then, in post-test 2, after implementing this method for totally seven meetings, the students’ mean score achieved 70.14. The students’ improvement covers all of the indicators of reading comprehension including (1) finding the main idea of the text; (2) getting the information which is textually explicit; (3) obtaining the implicit information; (4) finding the meaning of selected words; and (5) determining the appropriate discourse markers connecting either the ideas or events in the text. Experiencing four stages of this method namely previewing, click and clunk, get the gist, and wrap up; the students began to actively participate in (1) answering questions from the researcher; (2) asking questions to the researcher; (3) giving opinions or comments; and (4) taking notes in their learning logs. Therefore, it is highly recommended for the teachers to implement this method in their teaching reading.
