The aim of this research is to find out: (1) whether RAFT technique ismore effective than direct instruction technique for the 11th grade students of SMAN 2 Surakarta in the academic year of 2015/2016; (2) whether students havinghigh creativity have better writing skill than those having low creativity; and (3)whether there is an interaction between teaching techniques and students’creativity in teaching writing for the eleventh grade students of SMA N 2Surakarta in the academic 2015/ 2016. The technique that is used in this study isa quasi-experimental technique. This research was conducted from July untilAugust 2015. The population is all the eleventh grade students of SMA N 2Surakarta in the 2015/2016 academic year. The writer took the sample by usingcluster random sampling. The students are divided into class XI science 1 whobelongs to the experimental group and class XI science 2 who belongs to thecontrol group. The research instrument used to collect the data in this study is test(writing and creativity tests). The result of the test is the score of the two groups,the experimental group and the control group. The data, then, are analyzed byusing ANOVA and Tukey formula. The result of the research shows that: (1)RAFT technique is more effective than direct instruction technique for the 11thgrade students of SMA N 2 Surakarta in the academic year of 2015/2016; (2)students having high creativity have better writing skill than those having lowcreativity; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching techniques andstudents’ creativity in teaching writing for the eleventh grade students of SMA N 2Surakarta in the academic year of 2015/2016. Therefore, it is recommended that:(1) teachers apply the RAFT technique of writing; and (2) future research mayconduct the same kind of research with different sample and condition.Key words: Writing, RAFT Technique, Direct Instruction Technique
