The goals of this research are to describe about student’s perception of paperassignment, to observe the implementation of paper assignment, and to find outthe roles of paper assignment in enhancing student’s learning achievement.This research was qualitative research with the type of case study. Theresearch subjects were the students at sixth grade of English EducationDepartment of Sebelas Maret University. This case study employed purposivesampling that data were collected through observation conducted to sixth semesterstudents, interview, and document analysis. The sources of the data came from theinformants, events, and documents. Techniques used to reach the validity of thedata were triangulation and member checking. The techniques of data analysiswere examining, categorizing, tabulating, testing. The other way in analysing thedata was patern-matching.The results are drawn as follows: (1) Students’ perceptions toward paperassignment in English Education Department of Sebelas Maret UniversitySurakarta are: (a) The majority of the students at sixth grade of English EducationDepartment like paper assignment; (b) In the other hand, there are some studentswho do not like paper assignment, because of their bad experiences in doing paperassignment. (2) The implementation of paper assignment in English EducationDepartment of Sebelas Maret University Surakarta are: (a) Document used issyllabus; (b) Lecturers’ roles, such as resource, giving instruction, givingguidance, giving feedback, and motivator; (c) Types of paper assignment aredeductive, inductive, and mixture; (d) Students’ obstacles are the lack ofreferences, comprehending the references, the lack of intention, stuck in the idea,and time management. When the paper assignment is given in group, the studentsface other obstacles, such as, managing the schedule, gathering the ideas, andfocusing thought; (e) The steps in doing paper assignment are comprehending theinstruction, looking for references, comprehending the references, fostering thematerial, and finishing. (3) The roles of paper assignment are paper assignmentcould improve students’ knowledge, creativity, logical thought, responsibility,discipline, and technology. Besides, it also can improve students’ English abilityand learning result.Keywords: paper assignment, learning achievement.
