The goals of this research are to describe about student’s perception of paper
assignment, to observe the implementation of paper assignment, and to find out
the roles of paper assignment in enhancing student’s learning achievement.
This research was qualitative research with the type of case study. The
research subjects were the students at sixth grade of English Education
Department of Sebelas Maret University. This case study employed purposive
sampling that data were collected through observation conducted to sixth semester
students, interview, and document analysis. The sources of the data came from the
informants, events, and documents. Techniques used to reach the validity of the
data were triangulation and member checking. The techniques of data analysis
were examining, categorizing, tabulating, testing. The other way in analysing the
data was patern-matching.
The results are drawn as follows: (1) Students’ perceptions toward paper
assignment in English Education Department of Sebelas Maret University
Surakarta are: (a) The majority of the students at sixth grade of English Education
Department like paper assignment; (b) In the other hand, there are some students
who do not like paper assignment, because of their bad experiences in doing paper
assignment. (2) The implementation of paper assignment in English Education
Department of Sebelas Maret University Surakarta are: (a) Document used is
syllabus; (b) Lecturers’ roles, such as resource, giving instruction, giving
guidance, giving feedback, and motivator; (c) Types of paper assignment are
deductive, inductive, and mixture; (d) Students’ obstacles are the lack of
references, comprehending the references, the lack of intention, stuck in the idea,
and time management. When the paper assignment is given in group, the students
face other obstacles, such as, managing the schedule, gathering the ideas, and
focusing thought; (e) The steps in doing paper assignment are comprehending the
instruction, looking for references, comprehending the references, fostering the
material, and finishing. (3) The roles of paper assignment are paper assignment
could improve students’ knowledge, creativity, logical thought, responsibility,
discipline, and technology. Besides, it also can improve students’ English ability
and learning result.
