ABSTRACT
The objectives of this research are 1) to figure out a positive correlation between the reading habit and writing skill; 2) to figure out a positive correlation between the vocabulary mastery and writing skill; 3) to figure out a positive correlation among the reading habit, vocabulary mastery and writing skill; and 4) to describe the implication of the students’ reading habit and vocabulary mastery in the teaching and learning of writing
This research used quantitative method in the form of correlational research method. The population was the class of year ten of SMAIT Nur Hidayah Kartasura in the academic year 2014/2015. The sample was 28 students from X MIA-3 taken by cluster random sampling. The instruments in collecting the data were questionnaire and test. The questionnaire was used to collect the data of the students’ reading habit, while the test was used to collect the data of vocabulary mastery and writing skill. The techniques used to analyze the data were simple correlation and multiple correlation.
The results of the data analysis show that 1) there is a positive correlation between the students’ reading habit and writing skill (rx1y=0.396 and to=2.198 > tt=1.70); 2) there is a positive correlation between the vocabulary mastery and writing skill (rx2y=0.382 and to=2.110 > tt=1.70); and 3) there is a positive correlation among the students’ reading habit, vocabulary mastery and writing skill (R = 0.515 and Fo=4.522 > Ft=3.39).
The results of this research show that the students’ reading habit and vocabulary mastery have some implication on their writing skill especially in the students’ score and the process to write a text. Therefore, the students’ reading habit and vocabulary mastery can be implemented in teaching and learning especially in the teaching and learning of writing. An English teacher needs to arrange some activities in his lesson plan which can increase the students’ reading habit and vocabulary mastery that are related to the teaching and learning of writing.
