The objectives of this research are to find out whether there is a correlation
between (1) student’s interest in reading and reading skill; (2) student’s ability of
storytelling and reading skill; and (3) student’s interest in reading; student’s
ability of storytelling and reading skill.
The study uses descriptive research method, with category of correlational
study. The study was carried out in September to October 2015 at SMA Negeri 1
Karanganyar. The population was all of the second grade regular students of SMA
Negeri 1 Karanganyar of ten classes. The total number of the students was 340
students. The sample was 34 students taken by using cluster random sampling
technique. The instruments used to collect the data are in the forms of
questionnaire and test. The questionnaire was used to collect the data of students’
interest in reading while the test was used to collect the data of students’ ability of
storytelling and the essay test was used to collect the data of student’s reading
skill. The techniques which are used in analyzing the data are Simple Correlation
and Multiple Regression Correlation.
The result of the data analysis shows that at the level of significance a =
0.05 (1) there is a positive correlation between student’s interest in reading and
reading skill (rx1y = 0.580 and to = 4.030 > tt = 1.686); (2) there is a positive
correlation between student’s ability of storytelling and reading skill (rx2y = 0.355
and to = 2.15 > tt = 1.686); and (3) there is positive correlation between student’s
interest in reading, student’s ability of storytelling, and reading skill (Ry12 = 0.830
and Fo = 3.846 > Ft = 3.258).
The result of this research shows that student’s interest in reading and
student’s ability storytelling are important factors that give contribution to reading
skill. The students’ interest in reading has 45.30% contribution to the students’
reading skill, and the students’ ability of storytelling has 23.49% contribution to
the students’ reading skill. While simultaneously, the students’ interest in reading
and student’s ability of storytelling have 68.79 % contribution to the students’
reading skill. It means that the increasing of students’ interest in reading and
student’s ability of storytelling, either separately or simultaneously will be
followed by the increasing of the students’ reading skill.
