ABSTRAK
The research focuses on the code choices employed by the characters in the movie entitled Eat Pray Love. It was conducted to find out the types of codes used by the characters in “Eat Pray Love” movie and to reveal the ways and the reasons in choosing the codes which relate to social meanings. The research was a case study of sociolinguistics which employed descriptive qualitative method. The researcher used total sampling technique in collecting the data. The researcher took all dialogue containing codes used by the characters in the “Eat Pray Love” movie. The results show that there are six codes used by the main characters in “Eat Pray Love” including the variation within English language. The first code is English which is classified into two, Formal English which is used in formal situation, and Informal English which is used in informal situation. The second code is Italian. The third code is Sanskrit, then Spanish, Indonesian, and Javanese. There are four ways of the characters’ choice of codes identified in the movie. They choose the codes by employing the variation within language, switching between the codes, mixing between the codes, and borrowing the other codes while in their utterances. The results of this research also indicate that there are some social meanings behind the choice of codes used by the characters in the movie. The social meanings of employing each code are different. It depends on the domain. Hence, the characters of Eat Pray Love movie chose the codes because of the different reasons which include showing intimacy, expressing feeling, softening request, teaching language, showing respect, lexical need, showing solidarity, referring something, conveying message, changing topic, changing interlocutor, continuing interlocutor code, and excluding people.
