Abstract

 

Research background. There have been many housing developers in Yogyakarta who build so simple houses that they are uncomfortable to live in. This situation is resulted from the increase of housing demand that is not followed by the availability of land. To meet the market needs, developers usually build very small types of dwellings that are not convenient for the occupants.

 

Objectives.The purpose of this research was to perform the simulations of the most comfortable houses that the developers mostly constructed ranging from hook type houses, row type houses and facing junction type houses (‘tusuk sate’ type).

 

Methodology.This research was using the CFD program in order to perform a simulation of natural ventilation and the thermal performance in the ‘hook’ houses, row houses and ‘tusuk sate’(house facing a junction) style houses.

 

Outcomes.It was expected to find out how natural ventilation in the ‘hook’ (the two faces) houses, the row houses and the ‘tusuk sate’ houses affects the thermal performance.

 

Results. The results of this study showed the comparison of natural ventilation in the‘hook’ houses,the row houses and ‘tusuk sate’ (the end of L intersection) houses. From these results, it can obtain recommendations about the natures of ventilation and thermal resulting from these all housing types in regard to the orientation and material.
