An analysis of swearing word translation in “four brothers” movie

× This research focuses on the translation strategy and the impacts of the strategy to the translation quality especially the accuracy and the acceptability of swearing word translation in “Four Brothers” movie. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative. The data source of the research is “Four Brothers” movie, both the dialogue in source language and its translation. Whereas, the data in this research are swearing words found in the “Four Brothers” movie dialogue, its translation and comments from raters. The result of the research shows that there are six strategies used by the translator in translating swearing word in “Four Brothers” movie, namely; translation by using swearing word of similar expressive meaning and form, translation by using swearing word of similar expressive meaning but dissimilar form, translation by using swearing word of less expressive meaning, translation by using neutral word, translation by omission, and translation by using proper interjection. The most dominant strategy used by the translator is translation by omission and the least strategy applied by the translator is translating by using swearing word of similar expressive meaning and form. The analysis of translation quality shows that the level of accuracy is not really high. It shows that the swearing word translation in the “Four Brothers” movie is considered to be less accurate. The strategy used by the translator that produce the translation result with high level of accuracy is translation by using swearing word of similar expressive meaning and form. Unfortunately, there are only 3 data that are translated by using this strategy, and all of them are considered to be accurate translation. On the other hand, the strategy used by the translator results in poor accuracy level is translation by omission. Unfortunately, it is the most dominant strategy used by the translator. There are 52 data translated by using this strategy, and only 1 data (1.05%) that is considered to be accurate. The rest are considered as less accurate and inaccurate translations. The result of acceptability analysis shows that the level of acceptability is high. The translation is considered as acceptable translation. The strategies used by the translator that produce translation result with high level of acceptability are translation by using swearing word of similar expressive meaning but dissimilar form, translation by using proper interjection, and translation by using swearing word of similar expressive meaning and form. All data that are translated by using these strategies are considered as acceptable translation.
