ABSTRACT
The objectives of this research are: (1) to investigate the quality of the existing
course books used in teaching and learning Guiding subject in SMKN 6 Surakarta,
and (2) to develop an English speaking module in SMKN 6 Surakarta especially in
Tourism Department. This research was conducted at a SMK N 6 Surakarta in 2015.
This research is categorized as Research and Development (R & D). It was conducted
into two steps namely exploration and development. Stages in exploration were
literature review, field study, need analysis, and product planning. Stages in
development were prototype development, field testing, and final product.
After conducting need analysis through questionnaire, observation, interview,
and document analysis, it was found that the existing course book used in Guiding
class of Tourism Department did not match well with the students’ need toward
Guiding material. The course book was quite general for Guiding class for Tourism
Department in twelfth grade. The organization of the content was based on KTSP, whereas
the school implemented the 2013 curriculum. There was no example of the dialogue
between guide and tourists. There was no language function, pronunciation practice, and
vocabulary. The researcher concluded that there was a need of English speaking
module to guide their teaching learning process.
In the development stage, the researcher designed a prototype of a new speaking
module referring to Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) method and English for
Vocational School (EVP). The designing and development of the module were
validated by two experts. Expert validation is conducted to obtain advices and
suggestions for the improvement of prototype. After obtaining the feedback from the
expert, the researcher revised the draft. The module was tried out three times in order
to validate the feasibility. The final try out, class observation, questionnaire and
Focus Group Discussion (FGD) approved the module’s feasibility and
appropriateness for teaching and learning speaking skill in Guiding class.
It is hoped that the English speaking module can be used in teaching and
learning process, besides it can also help students have independent learning. The
researcher also hopes that the students’ can be motivated and active in learning and it
will create students centered in teaching learning process.
