ABSTRACT
The objectives of the research are: to find out whether (1) Think-Pair-Share is more effective than Direct Instruction to teach speaking for the Tenth-Grade-Students of SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Klaten Tengah 2013/2014; (2) students with high self-esteem have better speaking skill than the students with low self-esteem; (3) there is an interaction effect between teaching method and the students’ self-esteem on the students speaking skill.
The research method applied in this research was an experimental research. The population of the research was the tenth-grade-students of nursery department of SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Klaten Tengah 2013/2014 consisting of two classes, the XKP1 and XKP2. Each class consisted of 22 students. The samples were two classes. The writer used total sampling technique to get the sample because the number of sample is same as the number of population. The experimental class was taught by using Think-Pair-Share method, while the control class was taught using Direct Instruction method. The data were obtained from self-esteem test and speaking test. The  data from speaking scores were collected after the students got eight times treatment for each group. The researcher analyzed the data using ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) and Tukey test.
The research findings are: (1) Think-Pair-Share is more effective than Direct Instruction Method to teach speaking for the tenth-grade-students of SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Klaten Tengah; (2) the speaking skill of the students having high self-esteem is better than that of the students having low self-esteem; (3) there is an interaction between teaching method and students’ self-esteem in  teaching speaking. For the students having self-esteem, Think-Pair-share method is more effective than Direct Instruction. For the students having high self-esteem, think-pair-share is more effective than direct instruction to teach speaking.
Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that the use of think-pair-share is effective to teach speaking to the tenth-grade-students of SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Klaten Tengah 2013/2014. Therefore, it is recommended that: (1) teacher apply think-pair-share to teach speaking by good preparation; (2) school facilitate the teacher to be able to implement the teaching method well; (3) a student of graduate school can inspire the other students to investigate something new and beneficial for teaching learning improvement in Indonesia; (4) parents build positive self-esteem in their children; (5) environment support the students to improve positive self-esteem; (6) students have knowledge of themselves to build positive self-esteem.
