ABSTRACT
The aims of this research were: (1) to identify whether the combination of demonstration method and visual aid can improve students’ vocabulary in the sixth grade students of SD Negeri Ngrambe 1 in the academic year 2015/ 2016; and (2) to identify how the students’ response is when the teacher applies demonstration method that is combined with visual aid in teaching English vocabulary in the sixth grade students of SD Negeri Ngrambe 1, in the academic year 2015/2016.
This research was a classroom action research. In the implementation, the researcher was as collaborator. The research was conducted only in one cycle from August 29th to October 3rd 2015 that consisted of identifying the problem, planning the action, implementing the action, observation, and reflection. The subject of this research was all students in class 6 SD Negeri Ngrambe 1 in academic year 2015/2016 consisting of 30 students. The techniques of collecting data used were observational technique and non-observational technique. The researcher used observation, field notes, photograph or video, interview, and document, to collect qualitative data. Then, the researcher used tests to collect quantitative data. The techniques of analyzing data used were interactive analysis technique and descriptive statistic technique.
The results of the research showed that: (1) the students’ vocabulary improved. It can be seen from the comparison between the mean score of pre-test and post-test. The mean score of students’ pre-test was 58.80, then improved to 81.64 in the mean score of post-test; and (2) the students’ response showed positive responses. The students looked enjoyed and enthusiastic following the teaching and learning process. They paid attention to the teacher and participated in all activities.
Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that: (1) the combination of demonstration method and visual aid could improve the students’ vocabulary in the sixth grade students of SD Negeri Ngrambe 1 in academic year 2015/2016; and (2) the combination of demonstration method and visual aid could improve the students’ response during teaching and learning English vocabulary process in the sixth grade students of SD Negeri Ngrambe 1, in academic year 2015/2016.
