An analysis of interjection translation in sir arthur conan doyle`s the adventures of sherlock holmes into indonesian

× This study focuses on the analysis of translation strategies and translation quality in terms of accuracy of interjection translation in the novel The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and its Indonesian version. This study was aimed to describe the strategies used by the translator, and also the accuracy of the interjection translation by comparing the original and the translated forms. This research is a case study by applying a descriptive qualitative research type. The data were taken from the novel The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and the Indonesian version Petualangan Sherlock Holmes. In collecting the data the researcher applied purposive sampling technique. There were 176 data applied in this research. In order to obtain the data for the analysis of the quality of translation, the researcher distributed accuracy rating instruments to three raters to define the accuracy of the translation. There are nine strategies identified in translating interjections in this study: literal translation; translation by using an interjection with dissimilar form but similar meaning; translating interjection by omission; translating interjection by addition of element; translating interjection by reduction of element, translating interjection by using borrowing words; translation by using interjection of less or more expressive meaning; translation by using a non-interjective structure with similar meaning; and the last translation by using an interjection with a different meaning. Literal translation was observed as a strategy which was more frequently used by the translator. This literal translation usually was used to translate the primary interjection. Meanwhile, for the secondary interjection, the translator frequently applied the strategy translation by using an interjection with dissimilar form but similar meaning. Dealing with the accuracy as defined by the raters, the mean of all scores is 3. 7. The result shows that the interjection translation is almost perfect since the mean is close to the highest accuracy score 4. As a conclusion, it can be stated that the translation of interjections in the novel Petualangan Sherlock Holmes is relatively good although some rewritings are needed. The translators should pay attention to the context of situation which covers the sentences. Therefore, the interjection can be translated into the appropriate translation, with same meaning and effect of the SL.
