Abstrak : ABSTRAK The aim of this study was to show how discussion is used to improve the students’ speaking mastery. The researcher conducted a classroom action research from October to December 2006 at Class 11 SMU BUNG KARNO Karangpandan. The researcher conducted 3 cycles of action. Each cycle consists of four steps: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. In cycle one the researcher tried to activate the students in speaking and to improve the students’ speaking mastery by applying discussion method. The first cycle run quite well. Nevertheless, there were still problems arose in this cycle; the teacher did not give clear instruction and make sure that all the students had understood what they should did, the teacher did not give vocabulary list related to the topic, the type of discussion demanded some of the students’ knowledge or experience about all points, not only just some of them. In cycle II the researcher tried to solve the previous problems by implementing the better type of discussion. Therefore there were still problems arose in the second cycle that there were still some students who were still passive and the teaching learning process were also still teacher-centered, means that she still dominated the class activity. In cycle III she tried to solve the problems by encouraging students’ motivation and minimizing her involvement of the activity. In this cycle there were no problems arose anymore and the lesson run well. From the explanation above the researcher could conclude that after she conducted the actions the students’ speaking mastery were higher than it was. Before she conducted the actions the mean score of the pre-test were 6.5. And after she conducted the actions the mean score of the post-test were 7.4. The result of the research shown that after implementing the actions the teaching-learning situation created by the use of discussion successful. All the students participated more actively and confidently during the lesson and the teacher could handle the class well.
