The Influence of Critical Debate on Students’ Speaking Skill and Self-Confidence (An Experimental Research at The First Grade of SMAN Kebakkramat in The Academic Year Of 2014/2015)

× ABSTRAK The objective of this research is to identify: (1) whether there is significant difference in speaking skill between students taught using Critical Debate and Round Robin; (2) which method, Critical Debate or Round Robin, is more effective to be applied in teaching speaking; and (3) which group, control group or experimental group, has higher self-confidence. This research is a quasi experimental research with post-test only and control group design which is conducted at SMAN Kebakramat in the academic year of 2014/2015. This research uses mixed methods approach which applies concurrent nested strategy and quantitative data as the priority. The population is the first grade students of SMAN Kebakkramat. The number of total population is 300 students coming from ten classes. The sampling method used in this research is cluster random sampling. From the population, two classes are taken randomly as the sample. The samples are class X-10 as the experimental group which consist of 30 students, and class X-2 as control group which consist of 30 students. The research instruments used to collect the data in this research are test and questionnaire. The techniques of the data analysis used are descriptive and inferential statistics and the data are analyzed by using t-test formula. The finding of the research shows the following: (1) there is significant difference in speaking skill between the students taught using Critical Debate and Round Robin at the first grade of SMAN Kebakkramat in the academic year of 2014/2015 with the t-value or to = 2.2513; (2) Critical Debate is more effective to be applied in teaching speaking than Round Robin method, since the mean score of the experimental group (71.833) is higher than the mean score of control group (69.333); and (3) the students taught using Critical Debate have higher selfix confidence than the students taught using Round Robin, since the mean score of the experimental group (157.133) is higher than the mean score of the control group (149.133).
