× ABSTRACT The class B students of TK Dharma Wanita Gawanaan, Academic year 2008/2009, had problems in mastering vocabulary mastery. First, it was difficult for them to pronounce the English words. Second, they had difficulty to remember the meaning. Third, they were not interested in following the lesson. To overcome the problems, the researcher designed an action research using Ostensive to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. The purpose of the research was to investigate whether or not teaching vocabulary using ostensive can improve students’ vocabulary mastery. The action research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of six steps. They were identifying the problem, planning the action, implementing the action, observing the action, reflecting the result of the observation and revising the plan. The researcher collected the data using observational techniques. It consisted of field notes, researcher’s diaries, and photographs. In analyzing the data, the researcher used qualitative and quantitative analysis. The tests in the form of pre-test and post test were to find the improvement of the students’ vocabulary mastery. The researcher analyzed the mean scores of the tests. The non-independent t-test computation was used to analyze the significant differences between pre-test and post test. The result of the research showed that teaching vocabulary using ostensive could improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. The students could pronounce the English words correctly, they were interested in following the activity during the process of teaching and learning, and they could remember the meaning of the difficult words for the next meeting. The improvement of the students’ vocabulary mastery was reflected in the tests scores. The mean score between pre-test and post test 1 improved from 5.6 to 7.2. The mean score improves again in post test 2 that was 8.4. From the analysis of t-test between pre-test and post test 2 (to), at the level of significance α = 0.05, where tt= 2.086, it was found that to= 11.245. Because to is higher than tt, there was significant difference between the scores. It can be stated that there was a significant improvement of the students’ vocabulary mastery before and after the research and the teaching vocabulary using Ostensive can improve the students’s vocabulary mastery.
