Comical aspects in nicholas udall’s Ralph roister doister (a mimetic approach)

× ABSTRACT Comedy has its own charcteristic in producing the comic effect within its story. This research is an attempt to describe the aspects that brings such effect in comedy through its elements. It is also aimed to understand the effectiveness of the comic effect in supporting the whole comic situation. This is a descriptive qualitative research and employs library study. The primary data are taken from the dialogues in the story of Ralph Roister Doister. The secondary data, then, are taken from some sources that have significant relationship with the subject matter. There are two questions formulated in this research, they are: (1). How do the elements of drama create the comic effect of Ralph Roister Doister? and (2). How does the comic effect produced by the elements of the drama effectively support the whole comic situation of Ralph Roister Doister? The first question is answered using mimetic theory by describing the characters and the plot of the story as the imitation of low person’s action. The second question, then, is answered using the theory of comedy to show the aspects that create the comic situation of the Ralph Roister Doister. Based on the analysis, it is concluded that the actions of low person have created the comic effect within the story, as it can be found in the plot description. Such comic effect also effectively supports the whole comic situation in the Ralph Roister Doister. It is noted from the appearance of some comic aspects of the comedy.
