The objective of this research is to find out: (1) whether Total Physical Response Storytelling is more effective than After Reading Card Game for teaching vocabulary; (2) whether students having high self-confidence have better vocabulary mastery than those having low self-confidence; and (3) whether there is an interaction between the teaching techniques and students„self-confidence in teaching vocabulary.
The research methodology is experimental research. The independent variables in this research are teaching techniques (Total Physical Response Storytelling and After Reading Card Game) in teaching vocabulary and the attributive factor is self-confidence while the dependent variable is vocabulary mastery. The researcher conducted the research at Sekolah Dasar Islam Terpadu Insan Kamil Karanganyar in November 2015. The population is the fifth grade of Sekolah Dasar Islam Terpadu Insan Kamil Karanganyar in the academic year of 2015/2016. There are two classes as the sample of this research, the experimental class (VC) and the control class (VB). In this case, the technique used to get the sample is cluster random sampling. The techniques of collecting data are a non-test (a questionnaire for self-confidence) and a test (vocabulary test of daily activities). The questionnaire and the vocabulary test are valid and reliable after they were tried out. In this research, the data of vocabulary test are analyzed by using multifactor analysis of variance 2x2. Then, it is analyzed by using Tukey test. It is used to know the significant difference between cells.
The results of the research show that there are some research findings that can be drawn. First, Total Physical Response Storytelling is more effective than After Reading Card Game for teaching vocabulary. Second, students having high self-confidence have better vocabulary mastery than the students having low self-confidence. Third, there is an interaction between the techniques used and students„self-confidence in teaching vocabulary. Dealing with the result above, it is expected that teachers use Total Physical Response Storytelling for the students having high self-confidence and After Reading Card Game for those having low self- confidence.
