ABSTRAKThe research aims to know (1) can the use of songs improve the students’vocabulary mastery and (2) what are the students’ attitudes toward the use ofsongs to improve their vocabulary mastery.The population of this research was the fifth grade students of SDITLuqman Al Hakim Mojosongo, Surakarta. 5A class was selected as the subject ofthe classroom action research. It was conducted in two cycles. Each cycleconsisted of: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The qualitative data werecollected through interview, observation, documentation and diary; whereas thequantitative data were collected by conducting test.The result shows that (1) the use of songs could improve the students’vocabulary mastery. The improvement of students’ achievement is shown in thevocabulary mastery test which had developed mean score. The mean score ofvocabulary mastery test increased from 52.06 in the pre-test, 66.84 in test 1, and77.61 in the post-test. (2) The students’ attitude toward the use of songs toimprove their vocabulary mastery is: a) all the students pay attention to the lessonwithout did improper activity; b) all the students get enthusiastically involved inthe songs activities. Song is an alternative teaching method that benefits both to students’achievement and students’ attitude toward the learning activity. As the suggestion,the teacher should consider Song as an interesting and appropriate teaching mediato teach language, especially English. Based on such findings as presents above, itis also hoped that Song can be implemented in teaching other English skill. Keywords: vocabulary mastery, songs, classroom action research
