Related to the implementation of 2013 Curriculum which is still held in several schools, English teachers in Vocational High School has many challenges. One of them is about classroom management. This study aims to verify : (1) the teacher and student talking time during the English classroom interaction, (2) the types of teacher talk during English classroom interaction, (3) the roles of teacher talk in English classroom interaction related to the 2013 curriculum implentation, (4) the types of student talk during English classroom interaction, and (5) the preferences of students toward teacher talk in English classroom interaction.
Naturalistic study is used in this reseach. The subject of this research was two English teachers at SMK Negeri 2 Salatiga who had been teaching more than five years. The data were collected by observing 4 times class meeting at each teacher by using observation tally sheet, and recording by using video recorder and questionnaire. Then, the data were analyzed by using Flander’s formulates, and interaction matrix.
The findings of the study are: (1) teacher talking time is 63.37%, student talking time is 32.46 % and the rest of the time is silence time 3.82%. It showed that the teacher talk was the most dominant classroom interaction during the observation. (2) Asking questions and giving direction are the most dominant teacher talk types in Englich classroom. (3) The roles of teacher talk in English classroom interaction related to the 2013 curriculum implementation showed that it is important to implementing teaching plans, managing classroom activity, and promoting student – centered learning. (4) for student talk type is student response which is the most frequently occur in English classroom interaction. (5) Students tend to listen to the teachers’ instructions.
The result of the study is useful to improve teachers’ language quality consciously. Furthermore, English language teaching and learning can be facilitated.
