Black in News is an Indonesian television program for youth which is
broadcasted with English and Bahasa Indonesia during the program. The
presenters of Black in News are required to be fluent both in English and Bahasa
Indonesia. This research would focus on the code mixing applied by the presenter
of Black Spot segment of Black in News program on ANTV. The aims of this
research are: (1) to describe the types of code mixing applied by the presenter of
Black Spot segment of Black in News (2) to describe how the presenter applies
code switching (3) to find out the reasons of the presenter uses code mixing in
Black Spot segment.
This research is a descriptive qualitative research because it refers to the
method of solving problems by collecting, classifying, and interpreting the data.
The source of data was the video of Black in News Hong Kong Special Edition
episode. The data were collected by using purposive sampling technique. The data
are the forms of code mixing which were applied by the presenter of Black Spot
segment, Hilyani Hidranto. Thus, the data were analyzed one by one to describe
the types of code mixing applied by the presenter of Black Spot, to describe how
the presenter applies code switching, to find out in the reasons of the presenter
uses code switching in Black Spot segment
The results of the research are as follow. First, there are three types of
code mixing applied by the presenter of Black Spot segment of Black in News
ANTV, they are insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. Second, the
presenter applied code mixing in Black Spot segment by using informal form of
Indonesian language and formal spoken English. The insertion of foreign
language, particularly English, belongs to informal form of Indonesian language.
Lastly, there are three reasons of the presenter uses code mixing in the
program, they are: 1) because the presenter masters two languages, both
Indonesian language and English, the ability in using two languages is used as one
of the strategies to attract and grab larger attention of the viewers, 2) the presenter
gets to familiarize the viewers on how to use English in daily basis, 3) and for the
presenter, some words are best to be said in English for this show. The presenter
tended to mix languages in the whole segment, but she mainly applied code
mixing in the content of the segment particularly in reviewing the foods and
beverages in the restaurant and bar. It could be seen that the code mixing mostly
used by the presenter in caused by no equivalent terms in Indonesian language.
Moreover, it could happen because the presenter is already accustomed with
English in the daily life. It might affect the way the presenter in delivering the
program.
