Loss and compensation in the subtitle of jim carrey’s movie “truman show”

× This thesis presents a discussion about loss and compensation in the subtitle of Jim Carrey’s movie, which entitled “Truman Show”. Subtitle is chosen as the subject of the research since movie is the most popular entertainment among people. Therefore, subtitle becomes a vital activity. The aims of this research are describing the types of compensation that are applied in the subtitle of “Truman Show” and describing the factors that cause the loss of translation. The data of the research were taken from the dialogues transcription of “Truman Show” and its subtitle. Truman Show is chosen as the source of data because this movie is popular and its subtitle contains a lot of strong loss and compensation. The dialogues of the movie, which contains strong loss and compensation, were taken as data. The data This analysis led to the fact that the subtitle of “Truman Show” employs compensation in kind, compensation by merging, compensation by splitting, the combination of compensation by merging and compensation in kind, the combination of compensation by splitting and compensation in kind. The factors that cause the loss of translation are: the subtitle is not as specific as the source text; the diction of the subtitle is not appropriate with the context; the important feature of the source text is lost; the meaning of the subtitle deviates from its source text; and the translator does not transfer the aesthetic effect of the SL idiomatic expression. From the analysis, the researcher concludes that from the four strategies of compensation, there three strategies applied. There are two main factors that cause loss of translation. Firstly, the diction is not appropriate with the context. Secondly, the important feature of the source text is lost. The loss of translation occurs in the level of word, phrase, sentence, and idiom. Most of the loss occurs in the level of sentence.
