× ABSTRACT This thesis is a descriptive research that takes the sample from the sentences in the paragraphs of a text entitled The Euro: How Will It Impact Your Software Companies? written by Robin Dalhberg and its translation produced by TransTool version 5.0 program. The research uses the total sampling technique; it means that all of the sentences and paragraphs in the text become the sample of the research. In this research, there are two problems that the researcher wants to explain. The first problem is dealing with the quality assessment of the translation. The researcher examines the quality of the translation based on intelligibility and accuracy. For the second problem, the researcher examines the result of the translation to find the kinds of error that occur in the translation. For the first problem, the researcher makes four classifications to describe the quality of the translation. Meanwhile for the second problem, the researcher makes three categories to describe the kinds of error in the translation. Each category, then, is divided into several sub-categories. The researcher also makes questionnaires given to three respondents in order to rate the intelligibility and the accuracy of the translation. Then from the data analysis it can be concluded that: (1) 17 sentences (25%) are considered to have proper intelligibility and accuracy, (2) 2 sentences (3%) are considered to have improper intelligibility but the accuracy is proper, (3) 6 sentences (9%) are considered to have proper intelligibility but the accuracy is improper, and (4) 44 sentences (63%) are considered to have both improper intelligibility and accuracy. Meanwhile, the kinds or error that occur in the translation are: (1) 62 (14%) incorrect translations of plural noun, (2) 24 (5%) untranslated words, (3) 91 (20%) useless words, (4) 16 (3%) incorrect translations of ambiguous words and phrases, (5) 26 (6%) wrong word choices, (6) 8 (2%) incorrect translations of preposition, (7) 30 (7%) incorrect translations caused by wrong identification of part of speech, (8) 20 (4%) incorrect translation caused by different grammatical structure of SL and TL, (9) 29 (6%) inverse words order, (10) 16 (3%) improper translations caused by incorrect placement of translation’s element, (11) 124 (27%) improper translation needing a replacement by other word, and (12) 11 (2%) incorrect translations of certain term. In translating text, TransTool has advantage and disadvantage. The advantage is that TransTool can translate text in a high rapid speed. However, the disadvantage is that the translation produced by it can be considered as a bad translation since it needs a lot of revisions before dissemination. The researcher expects that the result of this research can give some contributions to the deeper study of translation particularly dealing with Machine Translation.
