This research is aimed to reveal whether: (1) Digital storytelling is more effective than picture-cued storytelling in teaching speaking; (2) Students with high motivation have better speaking skill than those who have low motivation; and (3) There is an interaction between teaching media and students’ motivation in teaching speaking.

This experimental research was conducted at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Banjarmasin in the academic year of 2015/2016. From three classes, the researcher took two classes as the sample, namely experimental class which was taught by using Digital Storytelling and control class which was taught by using Picture-Cued Storytelling. To find out the sample, a cluster random sampling was implemented. Each class was divided into two groups of which each consisted of students who have high motivation and those who have low motivation. To gain the data, two instruments were used. Those were speaking test to find out the score of students’ speaking skill and motivation questionnaire to find out the score of students’ motivation. The data were, then, analyzed by using Multifactor Analysis of Variance ANOVA 2x2 and Tukey Test. Before conducting the ANOVA test, pre-requisite test such normality and homogeneity test were conducted.

 There are some research findings which can be taken: (1) Digital storytelling is more effective than picture-cued storytelling in teaching speaking; (2) Students with high motivation have better speaking skill than those who have low motivation; and (3) There is an interaction between teaching media and students’ motivation in teaching speaking.

Based on the results of this research, it implies that Digital Storytelling is an effective medium in teaching speaking to the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Banjarmasin. However, to support the use of Digital Storytelling which gives the students an experience of combining the computer technology and the art of telling story in the process of learning speaking, a teacher is recommended to combine this medium with any teaching method and approach; therefore, it will make the students enjoy to tell the story and make them become active speakers since they create the story based on their style.
