Translation Analysis Of Simile From English Into Indonesian In Arthur Golden’s Novel Entitled Memoirs Of A Geisha

This research was designed to describe the translation strategy used by the translator in translating the simile and to describe the quality of its Indonesian translation in terms of accuracy and readability. This research is descriptive qualitative. The data source of this research is the novel of Memoirs of a Geisha written by Arthur Golden and its Indonesian translation by Listiana Srisanti. The data were taken based on purposive sampling. They were selected purposively corresponding to the research objectives. The data consisted of English simile and its Indonesian translation, and also the questionnaire collected from the raters measuring the accuracy and readability of the data. There were 317 data analyzed in this research. The first step in conducting the research was determining the translation strategies applied by the translator in translating the simile. The second step was scoring the accuracy and readability of the simile. The result of the analysis shows that there are six translation strategies used by the translator; they are keeping the image of the simile of the source language (244 data or 76.99%), using the other image or expression which is familiar in the target language (13 data or 4.1%), translating the simile by addition (22 data or 6.94%), translating the simile by total deletion (8 data or 2.52%), partial deletion (28 data or 8.83%), translating the simile without comparison (1 datum or 0.31 %), and translating the simile into the metaphor (1 datum or 0.3 I %). Dealing with the accuracy of the translation, the result are as follows: translation that is accurate covers 220 data (69.4%), translation that is not so accurate covers 84 data (25.5%), translation that is inaccurate covers 5 data (1.6%), and 8 data (2.5%) are deleted. The mean of all scores given by the raters is 1.4. Meanwhile, concerning the readability of the translation; translation that is easy to understand covers 245 data or 79.3%, translation that is not so easy to understand covers 63 data or 20.4%, 1 data or 0.3% are hard to understand, and there are no data that are very hard to understand. The mean of all scores given by the raters is 1.3. This research is expected to have a significant contribution to develop translation study, especially in the translation of simile as a figurative expression.
