ABSTRACT 

This research analyzed the politeness strategies of complaints in the movie entitled “Pitch Perfect 2”, focusing on two aspects: the topics of complaints and the politeness strategies in each topic. The qualitative analysis of 38 complaints in the movie shows that the complaints are mainly about two topics: others’ unpleasant acts and unpleasant conditions. Complaints about others’ unpleasant acts are extended using three strategies: Bald onrecord, Bald off-record, and Positive Politeness. Complaints about unpleasant conditions are delivered with such strategies as Bald on-record and Bald off-record.
